Overview
Evan is a first-chair trial lawyer whose practice centers on intellectual property litigation. For more than two decades, he has advised companies around the world and led teams in proceedings before juries, judges and administrative bodies. His work spans technologies and industries including media and advertising, gaming, financial services, the sharing economy, networking and telecommunications, and consumer goods. He also handles select complex commercial disputes, particularly matters in which trial is likely or clients face consequential business challenges.
His recent matters include a precedent-setting Federal Circuit decision addressing Section 101 of patent law and a $33.5 million jury verdict for the world’s second-largest premium chocolatier. Evan has also led a confidential negotiation that produced a near-$100 million resolution with a regulatory body and secured a federal court victory for a healthcare system in a $25 million antitrust case. In 2023, the National Law Journal named him an IP Trailblazer following a win involving a novel area of technology. His recognition also includes listings in Chambers and Partners, Managing IP and IAM Patent 1000, as well as being named Colorado IP lawyer of the year by Law Week Colorado.
Evan co-chairs the firm’s Intellectual Property department and its Technology and Media industry group. In those roles, he helps set strategic and business direction for groups comprising more than 150 professionals. During the pandemic, he conceived and launched the firm’s first podcast, TMT Time, focused on the high-technology industry. He produced more than 70 episodes over two years, speaking with guests including general counsel, company founders and CEOs, academics and elected officials about issues facing the marketplace.
Evan earned his J.D. from the University of Colorado Law School on a Seeman Scholarship. He was a Rothgerber Fellow and editor-in-chief of the Journal on Telecommunications and High Technology Law, now the Colorado Technology Law Journal. He holds a B.A. in Economics from Emory University.
