Elite Counsel exists to identify and highlight distinguished lawyers across the United States, while making it easier for clients and referring counsel to find recognized practitioners with strong professional standing. Through independent research and editorial judgment, we bring greater visibility to lawyers whose experience, achievements and reputation set them apart.
Elite Counsel was created to make legal recognition more selective, more meaningful and more useful.
Across the United States, our national team of researchers and editors looks closely at lawyers, their practices, their professional standing and the work that has shaped their careers. The aim is not to catalogue the profession or recognize as many lawyers as possible. It is to identify a deliberately limited group whose experience, achievements and reputation merit distinction.
That selectivity is central to what Elite Counsel represents. Fewer than 1% of U.S. lawyers receive recognition, by design. Recognition loses its value when it becomes commonplace; our intention is that inclusion should remain something worth earning, worth communicating and worth taking seriously.

That rigor is what gives the distinction its weight.
For clients and referring lawyers, Elite Counsel is intended to make the process of identifying outside counsel more straightforward. Rather than presenting an exhaustive directory, we provide a more focused view of lawyers who have earned recognition within their jurisdictions and areas of practice. It is another informed point of reference when choosing whom to instruct, recommend or contact.
For the lawyers we recognize, our role extends beyond the selection itself. Elite Counsel shines a spotlight on their practice, experience and achievements, presenting them alongside other leading attorneys in their field and market. Recognized lawyers can also use Elite Counsel materials to communicate that distinction through their own websites, professional profiles, social channels and wider marketing.
Independence is fundamental to the credibility of the recognition. Inclusion is by invitation only and is not pay-to-play. Lawyers are recognized because of the professional case for their inclusion, not because they have purchased a place on the platform. Elite Counsel is therefore both a recognition program and an editorial resource: one designed to give distinguished lawyers greater visibility while helping clients, referring counsel and law firms better understand who has earned recognition within the profession.
