Overview
For more than 15 years, Ryan Baker has represented brokerage firms, investment advisers, associated persons and others in the financial services industry. His work centers on disputes involving broker-dealers, financial products and the relationships among firms, their representatives and customers. Ryan represents clients in arbitration and litigation across the country, as well as in matters before the SEC, FINRA and state regulators.
Ryan handles customer and sales-practice disputes, including claims involving securities law violations, breach of contract or fiduciary duty, fraud and misrepresentation. He also represents financial services entities and registered representatives in competition, employment and recruiting disputes, including unfair competition claims arising when employees leave to join a competitor. His arbitration work includes serving as first chair in FINRA proceedings, and he handles litigation to vacate or confirm arbitration awards. Whether a matter involves one dispute or a group of related claims, his practice spans proceedings before arbitration panels and state and federal courts.
Ryan created the proprietary BBS Arbitrator Database, which contains detailed notes and information on thousands of arbitrators and arbitration awards. He regularly analyzes its data to identify trends, applying that work alongside his knowledge of the financial services industry when handling disputes. Outside his practice, Ryan has coached the Houston High School Mock Trial Team and the University of Memphis School of Law’s Mock Arbitration Team.
