Overview

Angela Bergman represents healthcare providers and companies facing fraud claims, patient protection allegations and government investigations. Her clients span the healthcare industry, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, ambulatory surgery centers, and home health and hospice providers. A central focus of her practice is healthcare fraud and abuse: she represents clients in False Claims Act litigation, self-disclosures and inquiries concerning alleged fraud by the Department of Justice, United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General.

Angela also advises clients responding to claims under HIPAA and other federal legislation. Her investigations work includes representing companies in civil and administrative matters involving the Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission, as well as conducting internal investigations for public and private companies into potential healthcare fraud, corporate compliance issues and other alleged wrongdoing.

When payor audits lead to disputed findings, Angela helps clients respond and pursue appeals. Her work includes audits by Recovery Audit Contractors, Zone Program Integrity Contractors and Unified Program Integrity Contractors, along with appeals of claim denials and extrapolated overpayment denials. She regularly handles Medicare appeals through hearings before an Administrative Law Judge.

Angela participates in the firm’s pro bono initiatives, with work focused on the constitutional rights of indigent defendants in Tennessee’s public defender system and other criminal justice reform issues. In 2019, she spent six months working full time with Choosing Justice Initiative through the firm’s first Fellowship placement. There, she advocated for bail reform in Nashville’s criminal courts and federal court, and worked alongside the Nashville Public Defender’s Office. Before joining the firm, she was a business consultant to major companies in healthcare, insurance and financial services.
