Overview
John co-leads Barclay Damon’s Intellectual Property Practice Group and co-chairs its Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Area. For nearly 25 years, he has prosecuted and defended complex intellectual property claims for clients in industries including telecommunications, medical devices, and consumer products. His litigation experience spans trial and appellate courts across the country, and he previously served as a federal court law clerk.
John has handled disputes involving numerous parties and proceedings in multiple forums. In one patent infringement case, he prosecuted claims against 22 defendants. In another dispute between a client and a competitor, he developed and carried out a strategy across more than 20 proceedings. Those proceedings were brought in two federal district courts, before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board of the US Patent and Trademark Office, and in the US Court of International Trade, the US International Trade Commission, and the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
His financial background informs his analysis of complex matters and his work on solutions aligned with clients’ business goals. John has worked with technical and economic experts to develop and lead trial presentations in cases involving substantial damages claims. He led the development and trial presentation of a damages case that ended with a jury finding of willful patent infringement and a $62 million judgment in his client’s favor.
John also frequently serves as local counsel in matters before the US District Court for the Northern District of New York. His experience with that court began with his clerkship and has continued through his litigation practice and service on its Local Rules Committee. He is also a trustee of the Northern District of New York Federal Court Bar Association.
