Overview
Kyle chairs Bond, Schoeneck & King’s Collegiate Sports Practice Group and is managing member of the firm’s Kansas City office. Since beginning his legal career with Bond in 2003, he has focused exclusively on representing colleges, universities and individuals in NCAA compliance, infractions and eligibility matters. His work includes advising institutions through NCAA enforcement investigations, investigating and reporting rules violations, and presenting cases before NCAA Committees on Infractions, Appeals Committees and other division-specific committees. He has resolved dozens of cases through the Negotiated Resolution process and represented multiple institutions in the former Independent Accountability Resolution Process.
Kyle advises schools, conferences and student-athletes across all three NCAA divisions, including Division I institutions in the SEC, ACC, Big Ten and Big 12. He regularly consults with institutions on compliance and monitoring systems, athletics personnel and organizational structures, and the application of state and NCAA name, image and likeness policies. His current work includes helping institutions develop systems for roster limits, revenue sharing and student-athlete NIL, as well as addressing the implementation of the House v. NCAA settlement terms and related College Sports Commission enforcement, resolution and arbitration processes.
Beyond enforcement matters, Kyle designs and conducts compliance audits that help campus administrators assess existing systems and establish procedures for monitoring NCAA rules compliance. He also leads external reviews of institutional policies and conduct-related concerns within athletics departments or individual sports programs, including hazing, discrimination, substance abuse and sports wagering. In those reviews, he works with administrators to define the scope of the assessment, interview relevant parties and report the findings. He also advises institutions on the public aspects of visible infractions investigations, including media and public relations statements consistent with NCAA requirements and expectations.
Kyle assists NCAA member institutions, prospective student-athletes and student-athletes with legislative relief waivers and complex amateurism, transfer and eligibility reinstatement matters. He speaks on NCAA compliance and enforcement trends at university events and professional programs, including those of the National Association for Athletics Compliance and the National Association of College and University Attorneys. He has also presented a practitioner’s perspective on the infractions process to the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions during its annual training.
